For months, the bride had pictured what it would be like to walk down the aisle.
There would be the excitement of the day, the anticipation while waiting for her song to cue, those first steps into view of their guests. Then, she would look up to see the faces of everyone she loved most… with a camera in front of their faces? No, wait! This wasn’t part of the plan! The average number of phones being held by guests to take photos or video at each wedding these days is 30.
The idea of an unplugged wedding ceremony has been around for a few years, but I still see very few couples thinking ahead to plan for such an outcome. Having an unplugged wedding means that you ask your guests to put away their cell phones, phones, and video cameras. Instead, you have made the choice for your guests to be present and in the moment with you, not looking at you thorough a lens. You have hired professionals to do capture the day for you. (And, believe me, your photographers and videographers will thank you for this choice. It is nearly impossible for them to get shots of your guests without a phone being included, let alone the guests who ruin your photographer's shots of you.) Let your guests snap away the rest of the day, but make your ceremony a sacred space they share with you.
Accomplishing an unplugged wedding is pretty simple. When your DJ welcomes your guests after they are seated, he will ask them to turn off their phone’s ringer. At the same time, he can ask them to put away their phones and explain that you have hired professionals, who’s photos you will share with them after the wedding. He can tell them it is most important for you two to see their faces during the ceremony, not their phones. You are asking them to relax and be present with you at this time.
Still, if you like the idea of your guests shooting and filming your ceremony, more power to you. That is certainly one way to go. And, they will surely pull out the phones and cameras with zero encouragement from you. My point is that YOU have the ceremony experience YOU desire by making a decision ahead of time and planning for it.
